Chateau Ksara Le Prieure, Bekaa Valley, Lebanon, 2020

The story of Le Prieure Rouge is intrinsically linked to Chateau Ksara's fascinating past. The winery was established in 1857 by Jesuit monks who brought their knowledge of viticulture from France. Le Prieure Rouge, meaning "The Priory" in French, pays homage to the winery's monastic roots. Interestingly, some grapes used in this wine are believed to be descendants of those originally planted by the monks themselves!

Expect a burst of fresh, red fruit aromas like raspberries, cherries, and plums. Subtly interwoven are intriguing hints of spice, such as licorice and black pepper, adding a touch of complexity to the fragrance.

The first sip of Le Prieure Rouge reveals a medium-bodied wine with a delightful interplay of fruit flavours and savoury notes. The initial burst of red fruit from the nose translates beautifully onto the palate, offering a refreshing and juicy character. Hints of earth and spice emerge on the mid-palate, adding depth and intrigue. The tannins are gentle and well-integrated, providing a pleasant structure without overwhelming the fruit. The finish is clean and lingers with a touch of peppery spice.

Le Prieure Rouge is a captivating blend of indigenous Lebanese grapes and a touch of Caladoc, a French hybrid known for its versatility. The primary grapes used are Cinsault, Carignan, and Mourvèdre. Cinsault brings bright acidity and red fruit notes, while Carignan contributes structure and earthiness. Mourvèdre adds a touch of richness and peppery spice, creating a truly harmonious blend.
